What is my elevation?
Press the button and your height above sea level appears below, read from your device's location. Or move the map: the reading is for the point under the crosshair. Search for a place to jump there.
Your browser will ask permission; the position is not sent anywhere except to this site's elevation lookup.

How the number is read
Every reading on this site is the value of the GMTED2010 terrain grid at the point asked for: 30 arc-second cells, about 1 km across, from USGS and NGA. It is the elevation of the ground in that cell, not of a building or a tower. Streets inside a cell rise and fall, so expect a few metres of difference from a GPS reading on a hillside, and more in mountains.
The same grid gives every one of the site's 70,000 town pages its number, and each page sets it beside readings from GeoNames and Wikidata where those exist, the ground around the town, its neighbours and its rank in its region and country.
